In this week's workshop, I present an exercise focused on describing a best friend without explicitly naming them.

"My Best Friend" Write-up

Before I pushed the door open, I was warmly greeted at the front door, as though she had been waiting for me the entire afternoon. Accompanying me as I ate my already stale lunch that I never got to finish at school, she settled into her favourite chair, her presence filling the room with a comforting calm. She listened as I talked about my day—my friends, assignments, and even the latest gossip. Her attention never wavered, her eyes sparkling with genuine interest.

Her hands moved gracefully as I spoke, scooping up some leftovers for me, a silent testament to her care. That’s when I noticed her hands. It was mostly bones, delicate and slender, the veins and tendons showing through like a map of a life well-lived. They had the grace of someone who had spent countless hours creating, mending, and nurturing. Each gesture reminded me of the countless ways she had been there for me—always ready to offer a listening ear, a helping hand, or just her quiet presence.

I saw a deep understanding in her gaze that spoke of shared experiences and unconditional support. Every wrinkle on her face told a story of love and endurance, each line a testament to the many years she had devoted to making my world brighter. Her laughter was a melody that resonated with warmth and wisdom, a gentle reminder that no matter how complex life might become, there was always a haven to return to, filled with compassion and patience.

Insights

I learnt how to convey the essence of this special relationship through vivid imagery and sensory details. By highlighting gestures, presence, and shared moments to capture the warmth and depth of this connection while allowing readers to infer the significance of the bond being described.
